Our food system is broken. Farms and producers are constantly being pushed to increase their yields, typically at the expense of workers and the environment.

Unfortunately, this overproduction has led to overconsumption and huge amounts of waste.

The National Resource Defense Council (NRDC) estimates that up to 40% of the food in the United States is never eaten!

In other words, imagine purchasing five bags of groceries and immediately throwing away two.

Banana waste problem

When it comes to bananas, the amount of this fruit that goes to waste is staggering. It is estimated that almost 50% of all bananas produced go to waste.

You probably already know that bananas have a short shelf life.

On the counter, bananas stay fresh for two to seven days.

Eventually, they will turn black and mushy.

However, these overripe bananas only make up a portion of all bananas that are thrown away.

According to the World Resource Institute, 70% of the food produced in Latin America is exported.

Of this food, 56% of it is wasted before the food has even reached distribution.

Fresh bananas can be rejected for export and thrown away because they have scuffs, are too ripe, or are not the perfect size.

Barnana Solution

Barnana is a company that has turned its business into part of the food waste solution.

Their mission is “To provide innovative, healthier, delicious, banana-based snacks while minimizing our impact on the environment.”

This company takes bananas that normally go to waste and turns them into tasty snacks.

They have upcycled millions of bananas and have partnered with farms in Latin America.

In other words, they take the bananas that would have been thrown away for having scuffs or not being the perfect size and use them to create their products.

What else do I like about Barnana, and where can I find them?
